Qigong= energy flow. Keep your Qi glowing and flowing rather than balled up and tight

With Qigong we can learn to keep our focus where we have the power to change. Using breath, movements and holistic tools, we can navigating stress with a clear head and nourished body.1

Try this yourself at home. Great to ground yourself and energize your day.

Always trust your body, if any suggestions are not right for you, adjust your self until it is. Qigong is about effortlessness and ease. These simple movements can transform your thoughts and energy as you move throughout the day.

Dantian empowerment is a powerful way to supercharge your energy.

Our three dantians connect us with vitality, love and wisdom, and are considered staples of Shaolin Qigong. This simple moving meditation calms your mind, while energizing your body.

This form is a template for your own practice, once you learn the form, feel free to improvise on the length of each part. If you feel your lower dantian is in need of extra strength, you might want to focus 10 or 20 minutes on it, and save your other dantians for another day. If the centering form feels particularly calming, lean into it, there is nothing wrong with doing just that form for 2 minutes or 2 hours. Trust yourself, Qi is intelligent.

The practices I show you were handed to me from my Qigong teacher Robert Peng, who studied with a Shaolin monk for his whole childhood. If standing is challenging for you, this form can be done sitting as well. Try to keep your spine upright if you are able. Qigong is over 5000 years, a practice born deep in the Shaolin Mountains of China. The fact that this meditation has survived so many generations, speaks to its consistency.


When we deepen our breath– our brain and body adjust.


Uncertainty can bring up fear and anxiety, and for some people- it triggers dissociation. It alters our heart rate and stress hormones and often brings up the fight/flight response, otherwise known as the Sympathetic Nervous System.

  • The sympathetic system connects us to the four stress responses to protect ourselves from perceived harm: fight/flight/freeze/fawn. Sympathetic stress,  inhibits metabolism, and favors energy created by the adrenals, releasing adrenaline & other stress hormones into the system for a boost of extra energy needed to protect from danger.

Most likely one of these stress responses feels like home to you,  although for people who’ve experienced trauma in their life, often know all four intimately. Plus new research is revealing that people with PTSD or CPTSD, are living in chronic freeze mode.

Luckily Qigong offers a safe empowered shift into a parasympathetic nervous system state, (as does yoga, meditation, exercise, etc.).

The slow motion movements combined with focused breathing, shifts our nervous system into parasympathetic.

  • The parasympathetic system moves us into a state of relaxation, energy inward. Known as a “rest and digest” or “feed and breed”, energy. When we are in parasympathetic mode, our energy is primarily being created by our metabolism; so we can eat and sleep properly.

Qigong needs no equipment or expertise to begin. You can do it inside, outside, sitting, laying, standing. It is safe to do if you’re 9, or 99.

With a few focused breaths, it is possible to go from feeling anxious to experiencing soft feelings of content.

It seemed the mopey American teenagers walking in front of me didn’t realize that being in the Arches, in Southern Utah, could be a once in a life time experience. They were playing video games on their phones. I was walking on a rusty red trail, to one of the great wonders of the World, alongside hundreds of other humans. Complaining old ladies talked behind me, about the sale at their local mall when they returned back to Kansas. I was in a heightened state. I had been planning this month-long, solo road trip for a few months. This was the quest to say Goodbye to my Dad, since I didn’t go to his funeral. I’d wanted to go to his funeral, in fact, I had planned it, organized it, picked the music and sent out the guest list, all besides him on his death bed, but at the last minute, my mother canceled the whole thing. She vetoed every last wish of his. At the time, the rage I had for her took dominance over the grief I had for him, hence the reason for an adventure in the desert. I had to create my own funeral for my Dad, out there in the wild majestic stone forms. I wanted to pray, and cry, and celebrate the man who loved and raised me. 

When the screaming child up ahead began to be scolded by her parents in loud Italian, I gave up on the thought of listening to the sounds of nature and pulled my headphones on. It felt like I was the only one having a magical experience in that extremely powerful spot, so I let some drum ’n bass trance music escort me up the paprika stained path, not tourists’ mundane dribble. The two rock-windowed arches grew more magnificent the closer I got.

I took a right at the fork, toward the North Window, and headed up the stairway.

north windowThe stone arch was like a portal, or a large doorway into another area. People standing next to it looked tiny. It felt like a cathedral, yet shaped in the silhouette of a bird. Morning sunbeams flares landed on my face as I took it all in. The bass-drum-pulse pushed at my heart rate, as my mind listened for remaining echoes of native people’s ceremonial drum.

Scampering up the rock stairs I entered through the bird-shaped doorway. It was other-worldly, but loud, obnoxious humans were splattered everywhere— clogging the trail, filling the valley, up on the rims— tiny specks moving like ants on the very tip of cliff edges.

‘How would it feel to be alone here?’ I wondered.

There seemed to be an overall ignorance of how sacred the place was. I sat on a rock and closed my eyes. I wanted to just be. My body was buzzing. Pulsating. Awe swelled in me, to the point that tears pushed their way up from my belly, and brought a sprinkling of goosebumps. Sweet-salty tears of gratitude— not everyone gets to see this kind of majestic monument in their lifetime.

Since my dad had died, I’d been extra focused on appreciating the details, I think it is one of the greatest gifts that death does for us, it turns up the volume on the precious. I also experienced my normal extra-sensitive state of seeing auras, empathically feeling people’s moods, and my synthesia sensory cross-overs were more amped than ever. Feeling the vibration of stones, trees, and clouds had profoundly impacted my spirituality, and the ability to taste colors, and hear flowers was always second nature to me, but with the intensity of losing my father, the quantum field felt more present than ever.

The majority of folks focused on just one thing—selfies. They walked- posed, walked- posed, walked- posed, then left. Some of them only stayed under five minutes. They also seemed to have an urge to yell, which most people succumbed to, as if they couldn’t enjoy the beauty of the landscape without filling it up with their own voice.

I watched a large group of young adults from France, with what looked like their teacher or coach. The seventy or so teens huddled on the side of a cliff slope, as their leader let loose huge rage. He was furious at them. I don’t speak French, so I could only guess what he was mad about, maybe some had run off to make-out? Or smoke out? Had he lost a few of them for a while? His volume and grotesque facial expressions, combined with spit flying onto the sand, helped me surmised that he was highly disappointed in the lot of them. They barely paid attention. Even through my headphones, I heard the barked commands bounce off the stone. I turned my music up.

Squinting my hazel eyes smaller, I opened my third eye wider, and scanned the horizon. I was searching for the sign of where to go next. I spotted an energy orb, glowing yellow like a neon sign, pointing me where to go. It was around the rim on the opposite side of where I was sitting.

Happy to leave the screaming coach, I descended into the bowl. Passing obese Americans and clusters of tours from Japan, I spotted a walking stick on the trail, taller than me, with a forked split at the top. I’d been holding my favorite crystal, a Lemurian, which I’ve had for 20-some years, and I just knew this crystal was going to fit perfectly on top of that stick. crystal wandWedging the base of the crystal into the wand’s head, its tip pointed toward the sky, I felt the rush of connection with the elders who’ve walked there before. A sense of medicine people and wise ones from many generations. It felt as if I was holding a microphone, or an amplifier for my crown chakra antenna.

Once down into the bowl, the trail lifted up. I climbed the orange-red rock, stepping higher, until I left sand for solid rock. I found the spot, right on the edge of the cliff. Looking back was quite a different perspective; I could see that well over three hundred people were there. I set my wand against a shrub, and breathed deep, I grounded. I planted my feet and stood in starting position.

It was time for Qigong, time for prayers. I began my practice. Qigong hands moved slow. My monkey mind quieted. With my headphones off, I could hear three teenage girls the next cliff over, mocking me, laughing at how weird I was.

I breathed deep, gathered a ball of Earth energy, and bathed myself. I scooped down Sky energy, slowly, as if gathering a cloud, and my mind calmed even more. I felt the warmth from the rock beneath me and heard whispers in the mellow breeze. I felt so peaceful. It was calm. I sank deeper into my breath….in….out….in through the nose…..out through the mouth….in through the nose….then abruptly! Without warning— a wind gust crept up the side of the cliff and Bam! hit me square under the chin. I was stunned by its power. My footing was certainly tested, but I was good, luckily I was rooted on the edge of that cliff, and did not stumble or fall backwards. I began my slow motion moves again when a second burst came, even stronger! I heard it roar up the cliff, and land right on my face. It was fierce— yet purifying. (This time though, I backed away from the edge a bit.) The desert gusts continued to build in strength as I slowly rotated my body, exhaling at a snail’s pace to the right…. holding my ball of chi…. breathing in and rotate calmly to the left. I heard a crow squawking over my shoulder.

I exhaled, turning again, and gently opening my eyes. What I saw— was the strongest punch yet.

The 70 French teens, the bratty crying kids, the mocking teenagers, the old grandmothers from Greece, and Kansas, and Italy were all gone. The place was cleared out. My breath skipped a beat or two.

I was the only one there.

‘Am I dreaming?’ I caught my breath and completed my Qigong with eyes open. I felt rage and bitterness and judgment striped off of me by the wind.

Before the trip, I’d been afraid of the heat, of the harsh climate, of being there in August. But after finding my staff and feeling the wind jabs, I released my doubts. I felt safe and protected. I imagined elders, tribes people there on that cliff many, many moons ago, and saw that crow looking at me straight in the eye from one ledge over. I gave her a nod, took my own selfie, and enjoyed the walk back through the bowl in total solitude.

Qigong doesn’t always have the effect of clearing out a whole crowd simultaneously in a matter of minutes, but… it does have the effect of clearing out static in my brain, and anxiety from my nerves. If I allow myself to be present in my practice, I feel the effect, the clearing, as the day all the tourists vanished.

It’s been one year since my dad died.

Although anniversaries haven’t touched me much in my life, I am schooled by how important this date of his exit is. In some cultures, they wait one year before certain traditions of release, of honoring.

 Being part of an unusual family of shattered and made up bonds, without many cultural traditions, I learned to make up my own rituals of importance.  I will however pull from my Jewish roots and light a Yahrzeit candle, (which means “soul candle”) and I will sit in circle. I will talk to my father, in that sweet fragile language made up of prayer, imagination, longing, and unresolved conversations.

 One year of grief has changed me. I am not who I was before he died. I figured that would happen, but there are a few things that I never would have imagined, and I thought I might share them. 

13 things I did not expect the first year that my dad died:

  • I did not expect to feel both oddly disconnected and completely connected with the human race at random times of high intensity.
  • I didn’t know that people would start talking to me about their parent’s death, as if all these years before I did not have the right listening skills, and now that I am in The Dead Parents Club, they have a green light to share with me.
  • I did not expect to write a book about my father’s dying process.
  • Still, in this day and age, most people do not want to talk about death.
  • I was not prepared see certain friends retreat rather than to be around someone grieving.
  • I had no idea that grieving is such a trip.
  • I didn’t know that grieving can be psychedelic, transcendental, horrid, feel contagious, terrifying, releasing, reveling, erratic.
  • I didn’t expect to understand more than ever the gifts that my father wanted to leave me with.
  • I didn’t quite get that little losses in life can now touch upon a Grand Canyon of loss in my heart. Like bumper cars slamming into each other till one car just falls off a cliff.
  • Socializing while feeling grief is a bizarre sport, I never know how I am going to react – to anything.
  • I thought my Dad would hang around more, being that I talk to ghosts and spirits. But he only came to visit three times so far.
  • I did not expect the whole grief cycle to repeat again and again in varying speeds, at different intervals.
  • I did not know that most people are highly cautious to bring up anything reminding me of grief, where I long to talk about it and share my grief with others.

Writing has unfolded a powerful tool for me. It has become my tireless witness, my microphone, as I remember and lay down the story of my dad’s passing. The passion my dad had about Death with Dignity was a phenomenal experience, and his journey has inspired my voice to fall from my fingertips. 

A lil’ excerpt from my book:
The first two minutes after arriving at their house, my dad got down to business.
 “Ok,” he whispered, his chest was already becoming paralyzed, which made talking, laughing and breathing extremely challenging.
“Ok . . . I have made some decisions and I want to see what you think about it all.”

 He explained to me that he had been diagnosed with Lou Gerrig’s disease and that at any time now he might become fully paralyzed.  He asked if I knew about assisted suicide in Oregon, and informed me that he would like to die this way. He had no interest whatsoever in becoming paralyzed. Then he waited for my response to see how I felt about this. 

I was surprised that he didn’t already know that I supported him 100%, but that was the theme in our relationship, kindred souls who didn’t really trust what the other thought. He was relieved when I shared that I absolutely believe in euthanasia and the choice to die how we want. He was concerned that my brother would have some hesitancy because he is a paramedic-fireman, but once again, it was a fear projection. My brother Matt was fully on board.

After that five-minute conversation, he hunkered back in his cozy red velvet chair, piled high with four blankets and a cup of green tea, and began to direct.  “There is a lot to do, we need to contact the doctor and the lawyer and the Compassionate Choices advocate.” He described the legal procedure of how to perform assisted suicide: a precise recipe of getting a doctor’s approval, lawyers’ signatures, waiting fifteen days, and getting the doctor’s approval the second time. The laws are set up to check the mental stability of the patient. Compassionate Choices is an Oregon-based group which helps families go through the process; they assign someone to your case similar to hospice.

My father started in with lists of what was left to be done; emails to write, books to order, the fabulous party he was going to throw that would be his last hurrah, AND the details of his moment to die. He had money to donate, organizations to contact, a speech or two to finish, as well as gathering the right people to receive the homework he needed to pass on: his legacy in the gaming world, and the in conflict resolution world – he had his teacher’s assistant to meet with, and books to sign. He had detailed plans for his party: who to invite, what food to have, how he wanted to spend his last few hours alive on this planet. He wanted his writers group to each write a piece to read, he wanted his mime troupe to perform, as well as lots of jokes, (of course he would tell the very last joke!) He wanted people to be able to share from the heart, and a party vibe. Complete with party horns and blow-out whistles, shots of Jamison for everyone while he drank his lethal medicine. He envisioned being with sixty of his closest friends, and that we would all to go back to schmoozing, drinking, even turning up the music to keep on dancing once he was dead!  

My father wanted to die in the middle of a rocking party, the grand last show . . . with him as the MC,  Star,  Director and Producer. I would serve as his stage manager, set designer, DJ and hostess . . . and all of this laid out, in the first half hour after I had arrived.













So 365 days of grief, this first anniversary.

I will light the candle, and I will feel connected with all of the other members in The Dead Parent Club.

I will tell a joke for my dad, and will find a way to laugh real hard, because my Dad wanted everyone to know that death is awesome, that it can be a celebration of life.

And I will crank up the stereo to Papa’s got a brand new bag by James Brown, and remember that last dance with him . . . as we both shook what our Mama gave us!

It’s not your average sight…. seeing people twisted and contorted, sat on like lazy-boys, kneeled on, walked on and elbowed DEEPLY. Together with my awesome friend, event coordinator and cousin Kylie, this is the 4th time I have helped host Maori healers in my town Gainesville Florida. Last week Atarangi, Bill and Manu whipped out 50 healing’s in a day and a half. Their Elders tell them when it is time to tour, their Elders let them know which country needs healing next.

I want to write and share what is like to be present for all this healing (except of course when I was on frozen yogurt duty).
When folks arrive they bring their towel or sheet, their water bottle and they bring their pain; heart pain, soul pain, body pain. Most folks who make it to these sessions have searched for relief for a while, and are willing to step out of the “normal” idea of healing.

When people walked through my garden gate and they heard bellowing laughter, screams from the people who were on the table before them, and tears of gratitude for the gigantic pain that was just lifted off of them (even those who came in “chronically” affected), I sense strong emotions are a’swirling. I smell fear mixed with hope on the face of a small framed woman burdened with consistent panic attacks, humility mixed with awe from the man who had a broken neck who is ready for anything to help his suffering. Excitement, curiosity, and reverence are layered with varying degrees of surrender and resistance.

The Maori work together, in synchronicity. They believe it is the community that needs healing, and so it is community that gives healing. Often with a quick nod or a slight look, they switch healers, or maybe join each other in a double elbow move up the spine. I have been told that at home, in New Zealand, they set up in a cafeteria, or large hall, children and dogs running freely, half of the community starts on the tables, and when they finish they hop up and trade places with the ones who were just offering.

This year, when the Maori arrived we were gifted with sunny, cool, exquisite October days, and were able to work outside. Three people arrive for their healing at once and my Maori friends begin. The prayers they chant as the bottoms of their feet touch the bottoms of the person receiving feet is powerful, sometimes out loud and sometimes silent as they sit for varying times soul to soul, foot to foot, listening, transmitting, releasing.

The thing that happens next looks like some bizarre mixture of bondage/comedy as the 300 pound Manu sits atop women and men, directly on their sacrum (the base of their spine), grabs his guitar and plays! He belts out love songs and jazz ballads, songs about break ups and hope, all sprinkled with jokes and words of wisdom. Ata lifts legs and shoulders in what appears to be extreme angles, digging her elbows deep into closed muscles, soft bellies, and can crack bones like nothing I have ever seen. Bill, Ata’s husband can kneel into thighs, step on calf muscles and dig through the muscles on the throat all while sweetly calming them down to relax, making people laugh, and of course sing along in harmony with Manu and Ata.

People laugh, cry, and they scream, and I do mean blood curdling screams (I wonder how far my neighbors could hear us?). There is much swearing as people get angry, and convulse, shaking out emotions that got wedged deep into their body long, long ago, and now is exiting. One woman who had her heart and throat deeply cleared said she could taste stale bread; old, crusty, moldy energy that she felt kept her from singing was now out, gone. I once had a session with Ata’s son Terrance, where I imagined it looked as if I was cursing Terrance to the depths of darkness (he was standing full weight on my calf), with me flopping around like a fish out of water, but truth be told, I wasn’t even thinking about Terrance, I was letting the full strength of my anger toward my father come ripping out my mouth, and let down a massive heavy guilt for never having made it to Wimbledon, as he had wanted of me.

The Maori don’t ask “Is this is too deep?”, they don’t lighten up if you ask. They tend to find your edge and cross it….just the right amount. When they are done, the smiles on the recipient face speaks louder than their screams. They truly are radiant, glowing, tear streaked and fresh. Afterword, we had them lay on a rug in the lawn, or walk down to the garden, where some people stay for hours, crying, meditating, or sleeping.

I am moved with the level of gratitude people express as they leave, gratitude for the Maori, for the experience, but mostly for their selves; they faced their pain, and made it through to the other side.

Thank you to your Elders of your village who sent you, and taught you (since you were three) of these healing arts, thank you for angels of safe travels and protection as you cross oceans again to go home.
